About Jerel as a Speaker

Where Architecture Meets Scholarship

Jerel McCants is not merely an architect who presents at conferences — he is a published scholar, active practitioner, and community advocate who has built a body of work that informs every presentation he gives.

His keynotes challenge audiences to think critically about the built environment: who it serves, who it excludes, and how architects and planners can do better. Drawing on real projects, historical research, and direct community engagement, Jerel delivers presentations that are both intellectually rigorous and immediately actionable.

Past speaking engagements include national architecture conventions, government contracting events, and academic institutions.

Published Work

Architecture of Segregation

In this groundbreaking work, Jerel McCants documents how the physical design of American cities — streets, zoning boundaries, public housing projects, highway placement — was used as a tool to enforce racial separation long after legal segregation ended.

The book provides architects, planners, and policymakers with historical context and a framework for identifying and undoing the embedded inequities in our built environment. It is both a scholarly work and a practitioner’s call to action.

“Architecture has always been a political act. The question is whether architects are willing to acknowledge the politics embedded in their work — and do something about it.”
